| NXNE & black corners showcase gives rock a face-lift !

Toronto, CANADA May 20, 2004--There are so many catch phrases and genres to keep up with in music today. So it only makes sense that sitting patiently at the border of pop and the underground are new breeds of musicians, dabbling in “neo-post-retro-revival”. What does this mean exactly? It means it’s time to shake up mainstream music. This is precisely what indie label black corners had in mind when assembling their showcase for this year’s NXNE Music Festival. The concert takes a hard look at the multi-dimensional talent creeping up from Toronto’s indie scene with the intent to show what all the fusing is about. “black corners were thrilled with the opportunity to throw a party of rising artist, all unique in their approach toward creating music beyond genre considerations. The musicians here are connected in spirit, individuality, artistic integrity and a DIY asethic represented in ‘new school’ punk-rock fashion” says jon jon, black corners. Right now, for these artists it’s not solely about chart-topping. It’s actually all about ground-breaking.
The common denominator in all five acts: rock served straight up.
Terms to look out for:
Rock-soul: The recognizable voice from Kardinal Offishall’s hit “Ol’Time Killin’”, Alastair has been moving steadily towards putting out his own solo work. This local, soul-rocker has worked with producer Doc (esthero, Hawksley Workman) and k-os. Having recorded several albums worth of unreleased material, it’s only a matter of time before this young musician makes his debut.
Folk-rock: Newcomer ozfrankie brings with her a raw, mysterious folk-rock style. Her vibrant cover of PJ Harvey’s ‘50ft Queenie’ is not to be missed. Her booming voice and obscure lyricism are reminiscent of the bellows of Canadian diva, Dalbello.

Afro-Kraut, Neu!-Soul , “a sound that has teeth and a heroic heart”, have all been used to describe the sound of Shawn Hewitt. A cover story in NOW Magazine spurring a sold out showcase at Torontos’ Cameron House. Boasting local celebrities, curious hipsters, and a lineup that barred the media and record company elite. Also memorable shows in support of k-os, The Dears and an inspiring performance as part of the 2004 EYE Weekly CMW Showcase. It has become clear that with growing anticipation, the journey of Shawn Hewitt is poised to explode to a triumphant height.

Naughty-rock: Also scheduled to perform is Anjulie. She bangs it out with, what many presume is, a Tina Turner stage-influence. This bad girl elbows Avril out of view once she gets started. She is currently working with Jon Levine (of the Philosopher Kings) on the follow-up to her debut self-titled release. From Joplin to Jagger and Kravitz to Cohen, Anjulie’s persona embraces all that is rock.

Punk-rock: Philadelphia punk scenesters, Stiffed, will also be strutting on stage. With great the success of their debut release “Sex Sells”; Stiffed has pumped out another hot cd this year titled “Burned Again”. Lead singer, Santi White, takes cues from Blondie and Chrissy Hynde overtop a sound that has a definite Bad Brains and Devo flavour. Ska and new wave find a pulse revived in this band.
